Don Mueang district is located on the edge of Bangkok's suburban area. It is bounded on the north by the provinces of Pathum Thani and Nonthaburi and it lies approximately 22 kilometres north of city centre. Don Mueang district, which literally means "the upland where the town is located", hosts the Don Mueang International Airport, one of two international airports serving Bangkok. The airport is considered one of the world's oldest international airports and Asia's oldest operating airport. The airport was closed in 2006, at the opening of the newest Suvarnabhumi International Airport. However, it was reopened six months later to streamline the traffic of Bangkok's main airport. Currently the airport is mainly used by low-cost and regional airlines, and receives 17 million passengers per year. Despite it is closest to the city centre compared to the Suvarnabhumi, Don Mueang is less conveniently for tourists visiting Bangkok, due to heavy traffic on the road that connects it to the centre. An inheritance from its past as Bangkok's main international hub, are the many hotels located in the surrounding area. Don Mueang district is also home of some of the finest golf courses in the capital, like Kantarat Golf Course and Rajpruek Golf Club. More
